All tryouts will be held at the Plainview Pool Baseball Field

For 11u and above, players born between May 1 and August 31 must attend the tryout in the OLDEST age bracket. A decision will be made as to whether the player will also need to attend the younger age bracket tryout at the conclusion of the older age bracket tryout.

The 2023 Williamsport Team will be selected on June 1st, 2023.  Players interested in playing on the Williamsport Team ONLY are REQUIRED to attend this tryout as the November 2022 tryout will be a factor (as well as other factors described in Selection Criteria listed below) in the selection to the Williamsport team.

Tryouts will be conducted by paid outside evaluators as well as the members of the Plainview Board of Directors.

Team Formation:

In most cases, teams will be formed within one week of the tryout. When the selection of a travel team is made, you will be invited by email and required to accept the invitation. You will also be required to pay a non-refundable $500 deposit towards winter training and next year's travel dues. This deposit is due immediately. The remainder of travel dues will be due at various points over the course of the year.  The full 2023 travel dues and payment schedule will be made available in spring.

Non-acceptance and nonpayment will forfeit the players spot on the team.  Winter training will commence in January 2023.

There may be circumstances where there are not enough players to form a team (or additional team) in a particular age group. In this case, we will give the players the option to participate in winter workouts with the hopes of recruiting additional players to form a team. Plainview will continue to try and recruit additional players but there are no guarantees that a team will be formed. The player also has the option to join another program at this time.

Team managers and coaching staff will be officially named prior to the start of winter clinics.

Selection Criteria:

Please keep in mind that the tryout is only one factor in the team selection process.  Many factors are involved in how each team is formed. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Baseball Talent and Ability - Evaluated at the tryout and past performance on travel teams and intramurals.
  • Past Performance - Players that have proven to succeed in their respective levels in earlier seasons will be provided greater preference over players that have not succeeded or played at that level.  We will not penalize a player for a "bad" tryout if the player has shown to regularly succeed at his level.
  • Winter Training - Winter training is a factor in team formation. If a player continues to miss winter training or is underperforming at winter training, he may lose his placement on a team to another player.
  • Athleticism and ability to improve - More athletic players and players that have strong baseball foundational skills and the potential to improve are given greater preference.
  • Team Composition - At the older age groups, we consider total team composition in order to form a well balanced team. We need to make sure we have enough players on a roster that can sufficiently cover all positions. At the younger age groups, we place less emphasis on this as we encourage managers to experiment players at several different positions in order to verify where a player has an aptitude for a particular position.
  • Eligibility - Any player trying out for a travel team must enroll in the Spring Intramural Season and is required to play at least 75% of all intramural games.
  • "Coachability" - If a child has shown an inability to follow direction, lacks focus, or has been a behavioral problem, he/she might not be selected, even if he/she is one of the best players in the division. Conversely, a child who shows a strong willingness to learn and improve, but is not one of the top players, might be selected.
  • Sportsmanship: A child who has exhibited a lack of sportsmanship towards his/her teammates, opponents, coaches or parents may be excluded from consideration. Additionally, if a parent has exhibited a lack of sportsmanship toward players, coaches, other parents or umpires, the parent's child may be excluded from consideration.
  • Commitment: If a child has shown prior disregard for practice and/or game dates he/she might not be selected, even if he/she is one of the best players in the division.
  • Parental issues: We consider parents/guardians' on and off-field behavior. Parents are expected to be supportive of the team and the team's coaching staff and their coaching decisions. If a parent has known behavior issues, it can affect the child's selection to a travel team.
  • Availability:  The Travel Baseball Season runs from June-October. In the summer months (June-August), the travel schedule is especially heavy with games/practices from 3-5 days/week.  In order to be selected to a travel team, the child must be available to play the entire summer schedule. Families with plans on their child attending sleepaway camp, taking multiple week vacations, and/or often going away for weekends during the summer are strongly discouraged from attending the tryout.
